A Perfect Rest and Refuge

By Sarah Nelson

“He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.  On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.  Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.”   Psalm 62:6-8

My husband and I were hoping and dreaming about taking what we deemed to be a much needed family vacation.  Along came reality, and told us that plan wouldn’t be happening any time soon.  We both were disappointed as we were feeling tired and in need of refreshment and relaxation.   As I poured out my feelings to the Lord, He brought the verses from Psalm 62 to my mind and heart.  God is my REST and He is my REFUGE.  This position of rest can’t be found in a sunny resort.  It can’t be purchased on a travel website.  In fact, this position of knowing God as our rest and refuge is available to all of us, no matter where our physical location is.

Although we don’t have the resources to book a week away from the everyday trials and activities that require much of our energy and time, we ARE able to find rest and refuge for our soul.  If you like us, are feeling weary today, and maybe even discouraged, spend some time with the Lord as you read through all of Psalm 62.   It is a wonderful certainty that we can “hide out” in the refuge of God’s love and protection no matter where we are.  He is our rock, our refuge, our fortress, every day of the year, and in every situation we find ourselves in this day.

Praying for Your Pastor-Day 13

Pray that your pastor will make wise lifestyle choices in order to protect his health,
especially in the areas of exercise, eating moderately, and getting sufficient rest. Pray for times of relaxation and renewal to balance the stress of ministry.

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.  Rom 12:1-2

Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.  1 Cor 9:26-27

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?  For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.  1 Cor 6:19-20

But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, so that I also may be encouraged when I learn of your condition.  For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare.  For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus.  But you know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father.  Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I see how things go with me; and I trust in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly.  But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need.  Phil 2:19-25
